Mae Carden believed in nurturing the knowledge and love of music and the joy of singing,
and at Carden schools worldwide, the study of music is recognized
as a key component in the development of the whole child.
The Pre-K children joyfully explore music through chanting, singing, playing instruments, listening, and moving. Music class includes circle games, singing various songs, including ones from other countries, moving through space in different ways to the beat, dancing, playing instruments to accompany their singing, and recording live music. Activities revolve around the cycle of the seasons.
Carden Elementary students are active music-makers. They study the history and culture of music and are exposed to musical styles, periods, and genres. They play instruments with both pitched and unpitched percussion as the foundation. In third grade, the recorder is introduced, and after spring break in fourth grade, the students begin playing the ukulele. Beat and rhythm are fundamental to music and are introduced on day one of kindergarten. Reading, writing, improvising, and creating music are all introduced age-appropriately and built upon. And, of course, students in all grades sing together!
Middle School music is designed to allow students to experiment with several instruments- ukulele, keyboards, bucket drums, xylophones, and composing with the computer – while learning the elements of music. Modern and World Music are integrated into each lesson.
Carden Academy of Maui is committed to educating the whole child through a balance of academic excellence, character development, and enrichment through the arts in a nurturing, small classroom setting.
We are an independent, private school located in the Upcountry Maui area of Pukalani. Founded in 1998, the school serves children in Pre-Kindergarten through Grade 8, with one class per grade and a maximum enrollment of 184 students.
